Owls

Okay, if you know me, you knew this day would come. A post about owls and owl decor. I love owls! I haven’t always necessarily loved them in particular, but I grew up with them. Let me explain. My paternal grandparents attended Rice University, in which the mascot is…you guessed it…owls. My “Mimi” loved owls and collected them. She had all sizes, shapes and colors of different owl figurines on glass shelves by her window in the Living Area of their house. I remember being intrigued by them as a little girl and always loved to look at them. Mimi even had owl ornaments and if my memory serves me correctly, a small embroidered owl pillow. Oh, and a very cute stuffed owl that we liked to fight over, I mean play with.

I only have one cousin on that side of the family and so my sister, my cousin and I would go visit my grandparents every summer for what she liked to call an “Owl’s Nest Retreat.” We literally went every summer starting from age 2 until high school ended. My Mimi passed away in 2005, but her memory is still fresh in my mind and very much tied to owls. Needless to say, owls became even more special and symbolic to me after her passing.

Strangely enough, owls have actually become trendy! My house has owl decor sprinkled in as a tribute to Mimi and the memories surrounding them. Below I found some owl decor that can easily be incorporated into the home. It’s a mix of subtle (owl hook) and not so subtle (hello, owl cookie jar!) decorative items that can help bring a little of the outdoors in (in the form of a woodland creature). If owls are not your thing, I totally understand. However, there is just something about that woodland-esque feel that makes a home feel like a home.

Enjoy some of the fun owl items and try incorporating them in the home to liven things up a bit. Try the owl pillow to brighten up a sofa or chair or the mercury owls to add to the holiday decor. The whimsical owl cookie jar can jazz up a boring kitchen and the owl knobs can turn an old piece of furniture interesting. There are even baby items out there with the owl theme, trust me, I know. My baby girl’s room is owl themed. Have fun with it!

I always think of Mimi when I see owl stuff too! I literally laughed out loud remembering how we used to fight over that stuffed owl and all the fun we had at Owl’s Nest Retreat! We were very lucky to have such great grandparents! 🙂 Love reading your blogs and love you!

Loved reading this blog and I also am reminded of Mimi when I see owls. It’s neat how we all share that little memory of her. I’m sure I never won any of the fights over that owl. lol Ya’ll probably “rigged” that too!
