The Grass is Always Greener

Oh, how I love the color green! I especially love how a room painted green feels: peaceful, restful and fresh. Used in the right way, a room can instantly be transformed into a serene environment with a natural and organic feel. Green is a cooler color, so it can also create a sense of openness and make a space feel more airy. I personally have green in my home as an accent color and even used it as a main color theme for my wedding. Seriously everything in my wedding, from the invitation script down to the kermit button flowers on the dinner napkins.

If you are considering using the color green to paint your interiors, I have several that I have used on past projects and ones that I continue to use and love.  As a reference, I have broken the paint colors that I recommend into color categories: Neutral/Gray-Greens, Yellow-Greens, Bright/Lime Greens and Blue-Greens/Mints.

This is not an exhaustive list, just some top picks to get you started. They are all Sherwin Williams paint colors, but keep in mind that you that you can have any of these color matched if you prefer to use a different brand. All of the paint colors in this post are connected to my Color Wheel. Click on any color and it will link to my color schemes picks for that color. Enjoy!

Neutral/Gray-Greens:

These “sage” greens are greens with muted gray undertones. I love these neutral gray-greens especially in common areas of a home, like the Living Room or Dining Room. These colors work well if you desire to create a neutral backdrop with a more subtle feel. Svelte Sage is one of my favorites to achieve this goal. I have a client who used this as an accent color in her home next to Kilim Beige with tremendous results. Balanced Beige is another good taupe/beige neutral option to pair it with these greens. A soft green, like Softened Green (true to it’s name!),  can create a spa-like retreat for any Master Bathroom. Koi Pond is another one that looks great as a neutral for any space in your home. I have seen this look particularly gorgeous in a Kitchen/Breakfast Nook that has a lot of natural light.

Yellow-Greens:

These citrus yellow-greens can look awesome paired with a black accent wall or accessories. Try Independent Gold or Antiquity to accomplish this dramatic setting. The more crisp greens, like Hearts of Palm, can transform a dull Kitchen into a bright, clean space, especially with white cabinets to off-set and pop against the green. Pairing a fresh green like Ryegrass with a soft blue like Rain or Tradewind creates a perfect natural setting imitating a “grass and sky” feel; a seamless transition into the outdoors.

I also love using lighter colors like, Celery and Shagreen in Baby Rooms to create a soft lullaby-inspiring space. When I worked in Model Home Merchandising, I used these soft greens all the time in Baby Rooms with great appeal. Some of the bolder shades, such as Parakeet, look good as accent walls in fun spaces like Play Rooms.

Bright/Lime Greens:

I love these brighter/lime greens particularly in Kid’s Rooms or Play Areas. You can go with a more saturated color in these spaces since they are areas that are naturally more fun and playful. Try using a bold green like Lime Rickey on a wall in a little boy’s room for a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” theme, or in a teen girl’s room for a bright and fun punch of color. Go all out and use Electric Lime in a Play Room for an accent wall or two! These brights are youthful and enjoyable and can really give a punch to any kid space.

Blue-Greens/Mints:

Mint Green is a popular accent color as of late and can create a space that feels modern and fresh. Try Minted or Mint Condition as a soft accent wall behind a white or gray sofa for a stylish touch. Easy Green and Nurture Green have some blue undertones to them  and would look amazing behind a headboard in a Master Bedroom. Change things up in the Kitchen and paint your cabinets mint for an updated look. I love the combination of pairing mint with coral accents in a bathroom or any space in your home for a pop of color.

Whichever green you decide to use I can almost guarantee that you will love it in your space. Green has a way of creating an interior that is desirous to live in.  Enjoy trying out some of these fabulous greens! Please feel free to comment/ask questions  or leave a message. Glad to see your comments on green. I am considering using Latte as a whole house color, with a deep charcoal as an accent color on the window wall that you first see when entering the house. The office and dining room are across from each other. Originally I was going to paint the dining room red and the office green. That started feeling too “Christmassy”. I thought maybe I could do both rooms in green. Not sure which green would pair well
with Latte, if any. Thank you for your thoughts and advice…..

      Hi Cindy,

I love Svelte Sage as an accent green with Latte. It is still neutral, but is a soft green that complements it well. Grassland is one lighter than Svelte Sage that would also look good. Softened Green or Clary Sage could also work! Grab some samples and test them out in your lighting to see what works best. Let me know what works or if you would like more detailed help, visit my Color Consultation for my paint consultation information. Thank you!

[…] Ryegrass and Shagreen are two of my favorites and look so fresh in places like the Kitchen or for an accent wall in a bedroom. Koi Pond is another perfect green choice. My sister in law has this color in her home and it looks so soothing and serene. For a more detailed breakdown of some of my other favorite greens, see my recent post, “The Grass is Always Greener.” […]
