Sherwin Williams COM May 2016

Welcome back for the Sherwin Williams Color of the Month Review for May! I was anticipating the color for this month and was pleased to find out it was Caviar, a gorgeous black color. On the wall it has more of a soft almost velvet-like feel versus a super dark black.

I did a post awhile back on my go-to black and white paint colors and I’ve been secretly wanting to implement a design using black as an accent wall or on trim. I love how much contrast you can play around with when using black, especially as a wall color. It is very saturated, but used in the right places it can create a dramatic and sophisticated look. Even the name, Caviar, sounds fancy!
Caviar with Mineral Gray

For the first look, I used Mineral Gray to complement Caviar for an analogous color scheme. This scheme would work well in a Living Room or Master Bedroom sitting area. Mineral Gray is a gorgeous and rich color that complements Caviar nicely . I painted it below a chair rail, but keep in mind that you can use also use them separately in other spaces. These are colors that I would focus on using sparingly and with light accents (such as the white of the artwork) since they are both dark and saturated.
Caviar with Extra White

Next, I did the same set up for a sitting area using Extra White with Caviar. Extra White is one of my personal favorites and I have it in my own home for my trim and under a chair rail in my Entry and Dining Room area. Black and White combos are the perfect complementary color schemes because the contrast is so rich. For some color, add it in with your accents, such as pillows and other accessories.
Caviar with Fashionable Gray

Fashionable Gray is a gorgeous almost lavender color that works well with Caviar for a triad color scheme. For a more dramatic effect, I painted the trim black too! Used appropriately, painting trim dark can be a nice change from the typical white or light beige trim used most often.
As I was styling the scene for an Entry setting (or even an Office!), I came across some beautiful bright pink carnations. The pop of color was just what it needed to contrast against all of the grayish/black tones. Don’t be afraid to use color in this way for your spaces that need some jazzing up!
Caviar with Dorian Gray

I was excited to try this next paint color, Dorian Gray, for the monochromatic scheme with Caviar. I kept the trim painted with Caviar to show a second color option with dark trim and was really happy how the gray turned out with it. Do keep in mind that using too much dark or heavy furniture will start to visually weigh down your space. Use lighter furniture and accents (white throw on the chair) to help with this since too much dark can start to feel like a cave!
Rugh Design Rating
In summary, I was very pleased with how the schemes turned out. They all felt sophisticated and modern without being too heavy and dark. The trick is to contrast and play around with light and dark values in accent paint colors and furniture/accessories. Also, don’t be afraid to add some pops of color, like with the carnations! Overall, I would recommend Caviar as a wall or trim paint color to anyone wanting to add some drama and elegance to their space.

I have 2 days to pick out colors for a open floor plan!! I have manor house in my mudroom with white trim. I want to use this on my living room on a wall with a white mantel as a accent wall. Now I need to figure out what to do in the kitchen! I have honey maple cupbords with a White Island and light maple floors with maple trim. Don’t live all the maple but the white tones it. I have Patna bronze knobs, black, gray, taupe and white granite on back. Black with gray sandstone on island which is painted white. Help anyone for suggestions! Alcamey was the colors on the accentwall in living room and kitchen before. Looked great need a change. Natural choice is my other color on opposite walls. Doeskin with a maroon bronze type grass cloth in dining room. Monor house does blend nice with everything now I just need to find a color for my kitchen.
