How to Select Paint Colors for Your Home

Back to our Featured Color

The most recent Rugh Design Featured Color was Balanced Beige. While it remains one of my top neutral paint color picks, there is another color that is just as popular that also happens to be one of my essential “go-to” accent colors. Are you on pins and needles? It’s…Sea Salt by Sherwin-Williams! Sea Salt really is just as lovely as it sounds. I do believe that it does deserve all the praise and publicity that it gets. Sea Salt is the perfect soft blue-green color, with hints of gray, that I simply adore.

Most of all I recommend Sea Salt for spaces where the goal is a peaceful environment. Therefore master bedrooms and bathrooms are the areas that I most often suggest this color, but are not the only rooms where it can be used. Like I have been doing for all of my Featured Color posts, I paired Sea Salt with four other accent colors for each scheme (monochromatic, analogous, complementary and triad) to show you multiple ways to implement this color in your home.

Watch my Sea Salt Review!

Sea Salt with Halcyon Green

Sea Salt SW 6204 with Halcyon Green SW 6213

First, I combined the gorgeous soft and serene Sea Salt with the slightly darker-toned Halcyon Green to show a possible analogous scheme. You can create an analogous scheme by using colors that are next to each other or adjacent on the color wheel. Something that my new eBook talks all about! (Sorry, another quick plug!). These two blue-green colors reinforce tranquility in a space. I personally love this look and have translated this feel into my own home by using a soft blue-gray color on the walls while the accent colors are in a more saturated teal color. They definitely accomplish the goal of creating a soothing environment for me and my family!

Since analogous schemes can have less variety in color tones, try adding art or accessories with some different colors to jazz things up a bit. I did this in my home as well by using some coral accent color in some throw pillows on the sofa and the bedding in my master. Sea Salt and Halcyon Green are so versatile that they can be used in many different spaces and in many different ways. Try using Sea Salt in your master bath and then Halcyon Green for an accent wall in your master bedroom to coordinate. You won’t be disappointed!

Sea Salt with Virtual Taupe

Sea Salt SW 6204 with Virtual Taupe SW 7039

If you did read the last Featured Color post on Balanced Beige, then you’ve seen this next color that I paired with Sea Salt before. It’s Virtual Taupe and it works well with Sea Salt for a possible triad scheme. Triad schemes are the use of three colors that are equidistant to each other on the color wheel and give variety and interest to a space. I only used two colors here, Virtual Taupe and Sea Salt, but add one more color (like Special Gray) and you will have a beautiful and diverse triad scheme.

By using the neutral and soft-tone Virtual Taupe in this scheme, it offsets the light and airy Sea Salt color nicely. Also, Virtual Taupe is quite a bit more saturated, so it creates contrast as well. This dynamic duo can literally transfer to any room in your home! I love the thought of Sea Salt in the kitchen and Virtual Taupe in the Breakfast Nook underneath a chair rail or trim. Virtual Taupe really jumps out next to a bright white. So, another possible idea is to try Virtual Taupe above white beadboard trim (like in a guest room) and use Sea Salt in the adjoining bathroom.

Sea Salt with Cloak Gray

Sea Salt SW 6204 with Cloak Gray SW 6278

Next, I tried a new color called, Cloak Gray with Sea Salt and really loved it! Similar to Virtual Taupe, the contrast between the two colors is amazing. Both colors are cool-toned and would work well in spaces that need to feel more spacious, as long as the darker-toned Cloak Gray is used sparingly (maybe as an accent wall). These two complementary colors can work in multiple different areas of the home, but I set this up as a living room type setting to showcase how sharp the black furniture and metallic silver can look with Sea Salt and Cloak Gray.

One of my favorite things about complementary colors, like Sea Salt and Cloak Gray is the diversity and excitement they can bring to a space. Similar to the other colors mentioned so far, don’t forget to use accessories such as artwork and pillows to add more color and texture to the space. Cloak Gray would look amazing as an accent wall in a bedroom with Sea Salt on the other walls. Add some accents in bright aqua or teal and you’ve got a cool-toned color scheme with some pizazz to boot!

Sea Salt with Retreat

Sea Salt SW 6204 with Retreat SW 6207

Retreat was the last color that I used with Sea Salt and it really is true to it’s name as it creates a calming “retreat-like” feel for this monochromatic scheme. Monochromatic schemes are the use of a single color (in this case the gorgeous blue-green Sea Salt color), and varying light and dark tones from that same color to create unity and continuity in a space. Sea Salt and Retreat together definitely create this effect! I can easily see this color scheme in a master bedroom, completed by adding in a few patterned upholstered furniture pieces in other shades of the same soft blue color. Speaking of patterns…

I’ve designed several paint stripe details for some of my other Featured Colors and always love how they turn out. For this one I used vertical stripes and I was very pleased. It’s something different and can really help to spice up a room. Retreat is a few shades darker than Sea Salt on the paint swatch, so naturally this is a good combination! Once again, these two colors together exude a peaceful feel and would help to create an oasis in any room in the home.

Rugh Design Rating 5 stars!

Sea Salt is just flat out one of those colors that you can’t go wrong with. I continually encourage clients to try this color in spaces where the goal is a spa-like feel or to visually open up spaces that are smaller. If you are struggling to make a paint decision in general, don’t forget to order my new eBook, “How to Select Paint Colors for Your Home.” There are tons of resources to get you on your way to finding the perfect paint colors for your home. I ordered your e book and I’m very much looking forward to receiving it! I have sea salt in my collection, and it is a truly amazing color, however, it is over used? I tend to be a gal who shy’s away from overly trendy colors. LOVE your blog and all your amazing advice!

      Hi Erica,

Thank you! I’m so happy that my blog has been helpful to you! I do know a lot of people who love using Sea Salt, but I don’t think I would say that it’s been over-used. The blue-grays are more trendy these days as far as paint colors go, but there is always freedom to choose colors that work best for your home and that fit your style. 🙂

Let me know when you want to set up a Color Consultation! Thank you for your support!

Hi Laura! Love your blog! I was reading one of them from a year ago and fell in love with the sherwin william’s color oyster bay and painted our family room walls oyster bay. Still in love with it a year later and we get so many compliments on that room! Thank you! Question for you…I am thinking of painting our bedroom either oyster bay or something very similar. I have a greenish/bluish comforter with some decorative pillows (beige/taupe, white, deeper greenish/bluish). I currently have beige/taupe cellular blinds that I want to keep. Do you think I should keep the walls a beige/taupe and only paint an accent wall (or possibly two walls) oyster bay (or similar shade) or do you think I can paint the whole room oyster bay (or similar shade) and leave the beige/taupe blinds? Thanks, Dawn

Thanks so much! It is so rewarding to know that you have been helped with color through my blog. 🙂 Oyster Bay is a great color and one that I recommend a lot. It sounds like it would go well in your bedroom, too! If you want to go for a softer look, try Sea Salt on all walls. And yes, you can definitely keep your blinds taupe. 🙂
