Color Wheel Update: Amazing Gray

Amazing Gray SW 7044

The Rugh Design Color Wheel

Okay, so just to quickly recap, we have been working on adding ALL of the Sherwin-Williams paint colors to the Rugh Design Color Wheel. So as the process continues, I wanted to highlight a color per week that stands out.

So far, we have highlighted Drizzle (a beautiful green-blue color that will have you dreaming of the ocean in no time), Keystone Gray (a medium toned warm neutral “greige”), Urbane Bronze (a darker gray with a slight bronze undertone) and Greek Villa (a subtle creamy off-white).

Going forward you can find all of our Color Wheel Update posts here.

Featured Color: Amazing Gray SW 7044

This week, I wanted to focus on the color Amazing Gray SW 7044. Amazing Gray is quickly gaining respect and recognition as a go-to gray, especially in homes that have a neutral backdrop with pops of color in accessories and other accents. Amazing Gray is one shade darker than Worldly Gray and I would consider it a gray that is right in between a warm gray and a cool gray.

Some have described it as a “true” gray and I tend to agree, but I do think it leans a bit more to the warmer side. Just for a comparison, Urbane Bronze is the darkest shade on the same paint swatch as Amazing Gray. So, in short, the undertone is a bit hard to nail down, but I would describe the undertone as a warm gray.

If Amazing Gray sounds intriguing and you want see what other colors and schemes could coordinate with it then check out the color schemes I believe will coordinate nicely with it.

I scoured the net and put together a Pinterest gallery of Amazing Gray. See it below and let me know which you like the most. If you have your own pictures send them to me and I will post them!

Where to use Amazing Gray SW 7044

I love Amazing Gray as an overall main wall color for a home since it is on the lighter side, but at the same time has some depth to its color. Amazing Gray is gorgeous in a monochromatic scheme using only grays, creams and whites for a subtle sophistication. I especially love Amazing Gray with a bright white trim color for a contrast and a really soft look.

Living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens are a few spaces that work really well using Amazing Gray for a more neutral palette. Using pops of blue for accents, along with black and white, is also a perfect way to showcase Amazing Gray. The beauty of this color is that it is versatile, like so many grays and greiges, so take advantage of that and build your scheme around Amazing Gray as your consistent neutral color.

Amazing Gray works amazingly well (ha, no pun intended) for exteriors. A general rule of thumb for exteriors is to know that the paint color is going to appear lighter than it does in interiors because of the daylight. On exteriors, Amazing Gray comes across like a very soft gray color, almost an off-white greige.

Again, the versatility of Amazing Gray carries over to exteriors. You can add some fun accent color on the shutters or for the front door, like a teal or aqua. I also love the look of the HGTV Smart Home pictured below with the mixed white and dark trim.

The Best of the Rest

Amazing Gray had the spotlight, but I also wanted to highlight a color from the Color Wheel update, Optimistic Yellow. This bright and sunny yellow color is best used (in my opinion) in rooms with a specific purpose.

I typically specify brighter yellows in kids bedrooms and play areas. If you are an adult that loves yellow, it could work well for an office color or even a bedroom color if you like!!

I recently had my kitchen cabinets painted. Used worldly gray on top and urbane bronze on my island. It turned out great. Took me forever to choose, but the painters were quite impressed. They are/were at opposite ends of the color chip at Lowes. Fun with paint!!

When we painted our house Amazing Gray, I left the front door Rookwood Dark Red to see how it looked with the new soft gray color and I love it! I wanted something that looked classy and would show off a pretty wreath st Christmas. It is perfect! Our garage door is the same white as our trim. With your colors it would probably look pretty to have just the front door a stunning color but not the garage door. Maybe the garage door could be the same white as the windows or the same gray as the house? Or try out a sample can of some other colors that you like. It’s not difficult and not expensive and fun to see what colors look like once you actually paint it. I can’t pick colors from a tiny chip!! Good luck!

We used Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray on the exterior body of the house, a creamy white trim and garage door, and Sherwin Williams Rookwood Dark Red on the front door. I played around with the colorsnap visualizer on Sherwin Williams’ website just to get an idea and I highly recommend it since your gray may be different from ours. You can pick up color samples at a Sherwin Williams store, or Lowe’s, or I would guess that you could probably order them. I have found that the people who work at Lowe’s or a Sherwin Williams store are very helpful, too. Good luck!!

Follow up: Amazing Gray, white trim and Rookwood Dark Red on our front door turned out, well, AMAZING! I didn’t realize the front door and the Japanese maple would coordinate. Taking the color out of the body nod the house (from peach to this soft light gray) really helps the landscape to shine. And a pot of geraniums against the cool light gray exterior really pops. After the paint job, our house sold in less than a week!! Hate to leave it, now!

I just did my entire house in Amazing Gray and everyone thinks it is beige. My friend even asked me why I repainted my house beige since I was trying to go more gray.

      Hi Amanda,

I’m sorry to hear that you were not happy with the Amazing Gray paint results. It sounds like your lighting played a big part. Amazing Gray is definitely a warm gray and can possibly look more beige in certain lighting. Let me know if I can help you with an Interior Color Consultation to find the right color for your home!
