Color Wheel Update: Pussywillow

Pussywillow SW 7643 Monochromatic color scheme

The Rugh Design Color Wheel

To recap, we have been working on adding ALL of the Sherwin-Williams paint colors to the Rugh Design Color Wheel. We plan to have all 1700 colors up by the end of 2018 and each week we will release 25 new colors with my hand picked color schemes. In addition to the new 25 colors a week I will hightlight 1 color from Sherwin-Williams that I personally love or stands out.

Recently, we have highlighted Creamy (warm creamy white), Mindful Gray (cooler greige), Perfect Greige (warm greige with slight mauve undertone) and Antique White (warm off-white with yellow-beige undertone).

Going forward you can find all of our Color Wheel Update posts here.

Pussywillow SW 7643

Featured Color: Pussywillow SW 7643

I have been highlighting a lot of grays, greiges and whites/off-whites in my Color Wheel Featured Color posts. I know I keep saying this, but it’s true: this is not on accident! These are the colors that I get the most questions on and the colors that are currently highly sought after for interior (and exterior) paint colors. My heart is to help empower you (my readers!) to understand color and to help you make the best choices for your homes. I feel that I can do this through writing posts that feature colors that give the tools and information needed to get started. Of course, if you are still stuck or need help, I am always here for questions and Color Consultations!

This week, I wanted to focus on Pussywillow SW 7643. I like Pussywillow because it is one of those grays that is still warm while having a cooler and slight blue undertone. I feel it is very similar and comparable to Mindful Gray, but is a smidge more saturated. If you missed my post on Mindful Gray, it’s not too late to read it!

Pussywillow works well in spaces that have warmer wood tones and/or warmer selections to both help compliment and tone down the warm. The picture below is a perfect example. The banister is a honey oak color and the furniture is a warmer dark brown tone, but what stood out to me most was the rug and artwork. There are rustic red tones coming through in the rug pattern and the artwork in the adjacent space. I like how Pussywillow helps tie together the warm and cool tones for a space that is well balanced and pleasing to the eye.

Okay, now that you have a basis for Pussywillow, check out my Pinterest gallery for some inspiration. See below and let me know which one you like the most. If you have your own pictures, send them to me and I will post them! Additionally, if Pussywillow does sound intriguing and you want see what other colors and schemes could coordinate with it then check out the color schemes I believe will coordinate nicely with it and get started transforming your space!

Where to use Pussywillow

I showed a picture of Pussywillow with some warmer selections, but I especially love how fresh and airy it looks on interior walls paired with white trim and/or cabinets. If you have read my eBook or posts, you have probably figured out by now that I love the cooler colors and the brighter whites. It must be all of the beach trips I took as a child! Whatever the reason is, the bottom line is that I am drawn to the cooler schemes.

This kitchen in Pussywillow adds some contrast with an accent wall in the dining area with the color Naval (my fav navy color). A perfect cool scheme palette!

Pussywillow can get a bit darker on spaces that have less natural light, so be sure to test out a sample first to see how it looks in your lighting. The bathroom pictured below is in Pussywillow, but because there is less natural light, it gets more shadowed. However, it works well with the white tile below it to keep it from feeling too cave-like.

Not only does Pussywillow look amazing on interior walls, it is a beautiful soft gray to use on cabinets or on trim/doors. This french country kitchen is a perfect example. The walls are actually in Agreeable Gray and the island and interior doors are in Pussywillow. If you are looking for an accent color for you island or a warm gray with a slight coolness to it for your cabinetry, I highly recommend Pussywillow. I can’t get enough of how elegant it looks on trim work!

Pussywillow comes out looking just as good on exteriors as it does on interiors. It is the same feel: a warm gray with a touch of cool. Perfect with white trim and this aqua front door! Pussywillow would also work on trim paired with a brighter white main body color for a light farmhouse look.

The Best of the Rest

Pussywillow had the spotlight, but I also wanted to highlight a color from the Color Wheel update, Koral Kicks SW 6610. Coral has been popping up in nursery and kid room design for awhile now. I don’t think it’s going away too soon! In fact, Coral Reef was the Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year a few years ago. Koral Kicks is a soft peachy/coral that works perfect as a main wall color in a nursery or as an accent in a kid’s playroom area.

    Hi, Laura,

I’ve just recently discovered your blog and it is very helpful and informative for the paint-obsessed among us. 🙂 Thanks so much for your posts.

I just discovered your review of SW Pussywillow … only one day /after/ I decided on it for the exterior of my little 1949 brick house! I have 9 different gray colors painted all over my exterior walls! But Pussywillow I love all day long, day after day. It does seem the tiniest bit pink/purple certain times of the day (I’m due west exposure on the front)… but it’s soft and lovely and is really going to pop with my bright white trim and black shutters.

I’m doing my front and side porches in either SW Dovetail or SW Gauntlet gray… haven’t decided yet.

And the door… some luscious berry or red color. Yum.

Thanks again for your wonderful blog. I’m a fan and will keep reading and educating myself.
