Eider White Color Review: The safe and reliable white

Eider White Monochromatic Color Scheme

The Rugh Design Color Wheel

To recap, we have been working on adding ALL of the Sherwin-Williams paint colors to the Rugh Design Color Wheel. Our plan was to have all 1700 colors up by the end of 2018, but it is looking more and more that we will have all the colors up by the end of the Summer! We only have about 120 colors to go! We will continue to release 25 new colors with my hand-picked color schemes each week. In addition to the new 25 colors a week I will highlight 1 color from Sherwin-Williams that I personally love or stands out.

Recently, we have highlighted Lazy Gray (blue-gray), Extra White (true bright white), Passive (soft blue-gray with hint of green), Gauntlet Gray (dark gray-blue) and Rainwashed (soft blue-green).

Going forward you can find all of our Color Wheel Update posts here.

This week I wanted to focus on a color that I am particularly fond of for a soft white all-over color, Eider White. I categorized Eider White as a cool white when I wrote “The Best White Paint Colors: Undertones Explained” post and I stand by it.

See our most popular peel and stick paint samples. Available for $4.95 each.

Eider White Essentials

Below I will answer some frequently asked questions about Eider White. Keep reading to find out where and how I suggest to use Eider White.

What is the undertone of Eider White?

Eider White is a tricky color. The official undertone is an off white gray that can have a slight blue/lavender undertone. It comes across having a cooler blue/lavender undertone in some light and can have a warmer greige undertone in some light. It’s definitely a color chameleon!

What is the LRV of Eider White?

Eider White has a LRV of 73. This makes Eider White a light color. It is found in the “White & Pastel” section of the Sherwin-Williams deck and reflects less light than Snowbound (83) and reflects more light than Repose Gray (58).

What is the Benjamin Moore Equivalent of Eider White?

A Benjamin Moore color that is comparable to Eider White is Silver Satin OC-26. It has a similar undertone, but like all close “equivalents” is not an exact match.

Is Eider White warm or cool?

Even though it can be hard to categorize as cool or warm definitively, Eider White is one shade lighter than Repose Gray. I consider Repose Gray as a color that can still look like a warm gray, but in my experience has a slight blue undertone that comes out often. So, I kept Eider White in the cool white category.

Which colors go well with Eider White?

For convenience here are my hand picked color schemes and coordinating colors to pair with Eider White.

Where to use Eider White

My favorite thing about Eider White is that it is beautiful in spaces that need a subtle and soft neutral that leans a bit cooler, but doesn’t look too cold. It pairs perfect with black and white for some contrast. The inspiration picture tells all about Eider White: how it has a cool undertone, but comes out looking still a bit warm and yet not giving off a “concrete” feeling.

Eider White as a bedroom color

Love the farmhouse style that is still trending like crazy? I know, me too. It’s hard to resist, even though my style tends a bit more modern/clean lines...I digress. If you DO love the farmhouse style, Eider White works like a charm, especially in this cozy bedroom. The taupe accents and lighting make Eider White appear warmer and a bit more greige in this space.

Eider White as a cabinet color

Not only does Eider White look fabulous on walls, it also works as a soft off-white for cabinets. In this inspiration picture, Eider White actually looks cooler and coordinates seamlessly with the backsplash. The wood floor and beam help to warm up the space and are a good contrast against the white.

Eider White on exteriors

I love a white exterior and the crisp black and white exterior is still my current fav. Eider White looks like a bright white on exteriors (since colors go lighter in natural daylight), therefore I am a huge fan! This inspiration exterior features painted brick in Eider White and shutters in Black Fox for the ideal contrast.

The Best of the Rest

Eider White had the spotlight, but I also wanted to highlight a color from the Color Wheel update, Toasted Pine Nut. Now that beige is starting to trend, I found a gorgeous wall color that works to accomplish the beige goal: Toasted Pine Nut. I loved this warm beige neutral in the inspiration picture below. The stone fireplace creates some texture and the white built in is a crisp contrast against the Toasted Pine Nut walls.

      Hi Todd,

Thanks for reaching out! Great question. Eider White is a greige off-white that is one shade lighter than Agreeable Gray. There is a bit of warmth to Eider White, but it sounds like your lighting is causing it to look more rosy than is intended. Light coming from the west can cast a reddish tint on paint colors. Try changing out your lights to a cooler temperature to see if that helps any! I know re-painting is a pain, but if you can’t get it to look right, then consider a color that is cooler to contrast and tone done the warm lighting in your home. Keep me posted on what you decide!

      Thanks again for reaching out,
      Laura

Thank you so much! We are going to repaint, any suggestions for a very light gray white? We got samples of Crushed Ice and Big Chill, as we are wanting cooler tones.

Hi Laura! I am building a coastal home with hardier board siding. I am wanting two exterior colors and a trim color. I have chosen SW sensible hue for the top portion of siding that will be horizontal board and with shake accents for porch area. Trim is SW pure white.
The bottom story will be vertical board and batton. I am having trouble selecting this color. I have SW eider whit and SW shoji white in mind but would like your thoughts on a color that will compliment the sensible hue. Thank you!!

I have Eider White SW 7014 on all my walls except the master bed and bath. I absolutely love it. It pairs nicely with everything and doesn’t feel sterile. This is the first time I’ve lived in a space with plain white walls that I didn’t have a sense of gnawing in my gut to paint. It’s just enough for a good contrast with glossy white trim and flows well into my Anew Gray bedroom. It’s almost like there’s a change in light and not color when I moved from Eider to Anew. I’m very happy with these color choices.
