The Rugh Design Color Wheel
To recap, we have been working on adding ALL of the Sherwin-Williams paint colors to the Rugh Design Color Wheel. Our plan was to have all 1700 colors up by the end of 2018, but it is looking more and more that we will have all the colors up by the end of the Summer! We only have about 60 colors to go! We will continue to release 25 new colors with my hand-picked color schemes each week. In addition to the new 25 colors a week I will highlight 1 color from Sherwin-Williams that I personally love or stands out.
Recently, we have highlighted Passive (soft blue-gray with hint of green), Gauntlet Gray (dark gray-blue), Rainwashed (soft blue-green), Eider White (cool white) and Silver Strand (soft blue-green with hint of gray).
Going forward you can find all of our Color Wheel Update posts here.
Featured Color: Black Fox SW 7020
I’ve been highlighting more light/soft colors lately, so I felt like it was time for a darker shade to take center stage! This week I am focusing on Black Fox, a dark gray that is the darkest shade on the same fan deck paint swatch as Repose Gray, Mindful Gray, Dorian Gray, Acier, Dovetail and Gauntlet Gray. Can you tell I love this entire paint swatch? I think I have actually highlighted almost every color in this color family.

Black Fox is a dark charcoal gray, that is almost categorized as a soft black (hence the name). Since it’s more saturated, I see it most on doors, trim, and accent walls. That doesn’t mean it’s the only place to use this gorgeous color, it is just how I see it used most. I love the look of a soft almost black color on the walls, so if you have the right space to use it on all walls, then go for it! Check out my past post, Black is Back for more inspiration.
Okay, now that you have a basis for Black Fox, check out my Pinterest gallery for some inspiration. See below and let me know which one you like the most. If you have your own pictures, send them to me and I will post them! Also, check the Black Fox color scheme page for my hand picked color schemes!
Where to use Black Fox SW 7020
Like I mentioned, Black Fox is perfect for interior doors and trim. The inspiration picture below is the interior of a front door. The front of the door is actually the same color, so consider Black Fox for a front door as well! I love the contrast of Black Fox against the lighter walls and the piece of artwork in the hallway picks up on the soft black seamlessly.
This master bedroom inspiration picture is an ideal example of how Black Fox can be used on all walls and not feel like a cave. Cozy, but not a cave. The designer uses white trim, bedding and drapery to lighten the darker shade and also the genius move of using bright colors to counteract the saturation of Black Fox. I love the bright blue and pops of coral in the pillows and artwork, along with the light wood in the furniture pieces!

I am dying over this study by Traditional Home! The entire study is painted in Black Fox, including the trim and fireplace mantle. In this case, the cozy man-cave feel is desired for a more masculine study. The rug lightens up the room, but otherwise the Black Fox on the walls is dark and moody, but works to achieve the design goal of a “man-study.” I totally made that word up, ha!
Truly, one of my favorite places to use Black Fox is on exteriors for trim and front doors. It’s the perfect dark gray/soft black to pop out white, greige or light gray main body colors on homes. The shutters on the exterior pictures are in Black Fox and work perfectly on this gray and white exterior.

The Best of the Rest
Black Fox had the spotlight, but I also wanted to highlight a color from the Color Wheel update, Positive Red. If this isn’t bright red, then I don’t know what is. It is a pretty accurate name because I’m positive it’s red, for sure! Ha! I love this bright and happy red on this front door. It works so well next to the soft gray-blue exterior with darker gray-blue shutters. The red exterior lights are my favorite and pick up on the red, as does the red outdoor chair. Nicely done!!

What color is the home with the black fox exterior shutters? Any guesses that would look similar? Beautiful combo.
Hi Sharon.
Try Westchester Gray SW 2849. This is the color that came back for me when I used SW colorsnap tool.
