Color Wheel Update: Kilim Beige

kilim beige monochromatic color schemeI have been highlighting a lot of grays, greiges and whites/off-whites in my Color Wheel Featured Color posts. That being said, I wanted to focus on a color that is more on the beige side of the color wheel. I’ll be honest that I haven’t been specifying warmer beiges a lot lately, but that doesn’t mean that I never do. It just so happens that the gray trend is still going pretty strong and more of my clients are going away from the Tuscan trend with more brown-tones that were around before the gray trend. However, a few months ago, I had a client who was building…

Color Wheel Update: Pussywillow

pussywillow monochromatic schemeI like Pussywillow because it is one of those grays that is still warm while having a cooler and slight blue undertone. I feel it is very similar and comparable to Mindful Gray, but is a smidge more saturated. If you missed my post on Mindful Gray, it’s not too late to read it! Pussywillow works well in spaces that have warmer wood tones and/or warmer selections to both help compliment and tone down the warm. I like how Pussywillow helps tie together the warm and cool tones for a space that is well balanced and pleasing to the eye. I especially love how fresh and airy…

Color Wheel Update: Antique White

antique white monochromatic color schemeThis week, I wanted to focus on Antique White SW 6119. A few weeks ago I highlighted Creamy SW 7012 and within the post, I outlined the Sherwin-Williams whites with a comparison between the undertones (cool to warm). Creamy was the warmest off-white on my chart, but this week, Antique White takes its place as an even warmer off-white. Antique White is a soft and warm off-white that has a yellow-beige undertone, which makes it one of the off-whites that I specify when clients have a warmer palette. One of my first times to use Antique White was…

Color Wheel Update: Mindful Gray

mindful gray monochromatic color schemeWell, this week I’m profiling another gray, Mindful Gray. But really y’all, this paint color is one of my best friends right now…let me explain. I had a major design dilemma for one of my Interior Color Consultations. The couple had a beautiful home full of natural maple and pine wood for the trim, cabinets, and furniture. Probably my favorite thing about the home was the unique architectural feature of the natural pine planks on the soaring ceilings in their open concept living and dining area. They wanted to tone down all of the warm undertones…

Black is Back: Timeless and Trending

black is back feature scaledBlack is back, so to speak, and it is the “new gray.” In fact, I’m not sure if it ever went away, but now it’s trending! What in the world does that mean? You may have heard me talk about how design trends tend to cycle through about every decade. In fact, I recently wrote a post addressing how to transition your home from the “Tuscan” trend towards more of the “Gray” trend…

Color Wheel Update: Creamy

creamy analogous color schemeThis week, I wanted to focus on the color Creamy SW 7012. This warm off-white has been popping up lately in my consults and is a color that I have recommended (and still recommend!) to clients who would like a creamier white versus a brighter white for their spaces. I think my favorite thing about Creamy is that it is a warm white that doesn’t get too yellow. There are some creams out there that can pick up more of a yellow undertone and I love that Creamy is not one of those whites! I did a comparison with whites and off-whites on a scale of warm to cool last week for the…

Color Wheel Update: Snowbound

snowbound monochromatic color schemeYou may have heard of this beautiful and crisp off-white via Pinterest or Houzz. Snowbound is an off-white that has a cooler undertone if you are comparing it to Alabaster. If you compare Snowbound and Alabaster to Extra White (SW true white), then Snowbound has more of a greige undertone and Alabaster has more of a beige undertone. You could split hairs and say that they both have a greige undertone, but the main thing to keep in mind is that Snowbound is a brighter white (due to the cooler undertone) and Alabaster is a creamier white (due to the warmer…

Color Wheel Update: Light French Gray

light french gray monochromatic color schemeI am highlighting Light French Gray SW 0055, a muted gray color with a slight blue undertone. Honestly, it reminds me of my own wall color, Lattice. That’s probably why I was attracted to Light French Gray in the first place! Not to mention, it has been coming up lately in my Color Consultations as an option for an overall neutral paint color. I would classify Light French Gray as a cool gray that definitely has a blue undertone that can come out stronger in certain lights. So, be sure to test it out first if you want to err on the side of gray for your wall color…

Color Wheel Update: Alabaster SW 7008

alabaster analogous color schemeAlabaster is categorized as an off-white with subtle undertones of greige/beige, which honestly reads more like a creamy and crisp warm white in both interior and exterior lighting. It is just “off-white enough” to not be super bright white and is ideal for a softer white look. I believe that is what makes Alabaster so popular, mostly for those that wish to have a white that will still pop against their wall color, without being too glaringly white. Alabaster can definitely work as an overall main wall color. Especially if you are going for a more clean and modern feel in your home…

The 7 Best Front Door Colors for 2018

the top 7 front door colorsAs soon as I started thinking about writing this post, the craziest thing happened. All of a sudden, I started noticing everyone’s front door. I guess that’s not too strange, since it has been on my mind, but it has started to become a safety hazard! I have been catching myself almost veering off the road driving by homes with pretty front doors. Researching front door colors has proven to be interesting. It is almost as if the personality of the home and the people living in it is exemplified by the color of their front door. It is the “jewelry” of the exterior, so to speak. Truthfully, it is the perfect way to add some interest and color to a home if the main body color is neutral or if you are looking to add just a small pop of color.

Color Wheel Update: Amazing Gray

amazing gray complementary color schemeAmazing Gray is quickly gaining respect and recognition as a go-to gray, especially in homes that have a neutral backdrop with pops of color in accessories and other accents. Amazing Gray is one shade darker than Worldly Gray and I would consider it a gray that is right in between a warm gray and a cool gray. Some have described it as a “true” gray and I tend to agree, but I do think it leans a bit more to the warmer side. Just for a comparison, Urbane Bronze is the darkest shade on the same paint swatch as Amazing Gray. So, in short, the undertone is a bit hard to nail down…

Color Wheel Update: Urbane Bronze

Urbane Bronze Complementary Color SchemeI have been seeing Urbane Bronze everywhere lately. It’s like when your attention is drawn to something, all of sudden you see it all over the place. In fact, I actually decided to paint my front door Urbane Bronze! I love how it’s dark enough to create some major contrast, but at the same time it has a softness to it, which is why I think it’s so popular. Since Urbane Bronze is a more saturated color, I tend to recommend using it as an accent, rather than an overall wall color. Exceptions are areas like powder bathrooms or spaces in which the “cozy” feel is a main goal…

Color Wheel Update: Keystone Gray

Keystone Gray Complementary Color SchemeKeystone Gray is a medium-toned, warm neutral “greige” color. It is in the same color family as Agreeable Gray, one of the most specified colors for interiors in my Color Consultations. That is one of the main reasons that I chose Keystone Gray. I also love that it is a bit darker than expected for interior wall paint and can really add some contrast against whites and lighter colors. Keystone Gray works well in most all spaces since it is so neutral. One caveat is to be mindful of using Keystone Gray in spaces that are smaller or have lower ceiling heights…

My Top 5 Sherwin-Williams Neutral Paint Colors

top5About 90% of the time that I am contacted by a client through an online Color Consultation, they are looking for a neutral color to use in the majority of their home. There is typically a reason that they are repainting if it is an existing home (not a new build). Let me explain. In the early 2000’s, the “Tuscan” trend was all the rage…

Color Wheel Update: Drizzle

Drizzle Complementary Color SchemeDrizzle is a medium toned green-blue color that will get you dreaming of the ocean in no time! I mean, it totally makes sense why I picked it. I love blues and greens and I love the beach. I like to use Drizzle in areas that can stand a more saturated color, like in bedrooms or bathrooms. One of my long-time clients and friends has this color in her Powder Bath and it turned out beautiful! Laundry rooms are another area that are fun to paint a bright and happy color like Drizzle. Drizzle isn’t only for interiors! I have also specified Drizzle for exterior…
